If we are endeavouring to prove that certain religious changes tend to lower the general moral tone of a community and to weaken the respect with which the law is regarded and the sanctions by which it is enforced, it is surely admissible to point to the fact that these moral consequences have actually accompanied such changes. It is purely with this object in view that we refer to the unsatisfactory moral condition of the reformed communities, and we shall confine our reference to the narrowest limit.
