It was a time when the newspapers could at any time have an obituary on the front page concerning one or more persons shot by the German occupation forces for deeds of resistance or just as a hostage - events which the generations born after World War II may have heard of, but which fortunately do not arouse the emotions which we felt at that time.

In doing so he followed the example of Dr J. Mulder, the head of the clinic who was responsible under Professor Polak Daniels when Kolff had received his training in internal medicine in Groningen.
